Kunsthaus Graz
The Kunsthaus in Graz is also affectionately known as a baby hippopotamus, a sea snail, a porcupine, a whale or a “friendly alien” - the latter name was given to it by Colin Fournier, one of the two architects alongside Peter Cook. For him, the Kunsthaus is a biomorphic, indefinable something, a hybrid, alien and familiar at the same time, with the “charm of a friendly stray bastard with a highly questionable pedigree.”
Built as part of the European Capital of Culture 2003, the project quickly became an architectural landmark. It is mentioned in the same breath as the Clock Tower and Schlossberg and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Built between 1846 and 1848 as a modern department store, the building was gutted and connected to the Kunsthaus. The listed facade with its cast iron structure on the upper floor has been preserved.
